Online Art Lesson Designed for

Portland Museum of Art

(Portland, ME)

Inspired by David Driskell's painting Ghetto Wall #2, featured in the PMA.

The lesson highlights visual symbolism, storytelling, and historical context in art.

Contemporary artist Mark Bradford is also highlighted in the lesson. His use of collage and mixed media, as well as his social, political, and cultural commentaries reflect that of Driskell.

Art making:

  • Create a found material collage that uses visual symbolism to represent your story during COVID-19.

  • Essential Q's: How can the lives and work of David Driskell and Mark Bradford inspire us to tell our own stories? How can we use visual symbolism to reflect our current situation?
